The Medela Pump In Style Advanced breast pump is wonderfully convenient, portable, and discrete. It is great for moms who pump exclusively. I recently purchased the Medela Pump In Style Advanced after the engine overheated on my Playtex Embrace model breast pump. I pump every 3-4 hours for about 30-45 min at a time.
There are some definite pluses to the Medela model, but there are some minuses too. First, the pluses...
The backpack is made of a black microfiber, so it is easy to clean and goes with any outfit. There is no brand name or cutesy picture on the outside that identifies it as a breast pump. That is a definite plus for someone who has to carry this bag to work. There is a cooler bag, a hard container cooler pack and 4 bottles that come with the pump. The engine of the pump is in the lower compartment, which is big enough to also hold all of the cords and tubes. The main compartment of the bag is pretty spacious. There is enough room for you to hold the breast shields, your lunch or wallet, and a drink. Remember you have to keep well hydrated if you plan on pumping.
The suction power of the unit is adjustable and goes up to a pretty intolerable level. So to each her own, but be careful not to accidentally crank it all the way up, trust me it is not fun. The unit is relatively quiet and almost melodic after a while. The parts are easy to clean and assemble. Easy is good when you have an infant that demands your attention, or an infant and other kids running around, or a presentation to finish at work. Easy is just good.
Now for the minuses....
The breast shields are made of a hard plastic so they don't exactly form to your own shape. If you breath to hard or shift slightly while using the pump, the shield may slip and you will lose suction. It can be a pain to constantly need to readjust. I found that I had to hold the shields up to my breasts the entire time I pumped. Doing that while I sat and watched TV wasn't really too bad, but if I needed to use the computer, or do anything else it was very difficult. I imagine this would be nearly impossible to a woman who planned to work through pumping. Ultimately, I ended up purchasing a breast feeding corset-type bra that was created to hold the breast shields in place and free up your hands.
Another problem I had with this product is the valve that comes with it. After washing and using a few times, the rubber tore and made the suction useless. I had to purchase additional valves for the unit. They aren't expensive, but it was just one more thing on my ever growing To Do list.
I'm not a huge fan of breastfeeding to begin with. I believe that giving your child breast milk is one of the best things you can do for him/her, but I just don't particularly enjoy the whole pumping aspect of it. It's a little uncomfortable and time consuming, no matter what pump you chose. I always feel like a cow strapped up to a machine in a dairy farm when I pump. But, that's my own issue... I have tried other pumps and they all have their pluses and minuses, but the Medela pump was the best one overall for the amount I am pumping. I would definitely recommended it to my friends or family and to you too. Search Amazon.com for medela pump in style
